Religion as World-Loyalty

In “Religion in the MakingWhitehead defines Religion as “world-loyalty.”  There is a good deal more in the book to discuss at a later date (like after I get a new copy of it because all the pages fell out today!), but there is something important here.

Why? One could assume that Religion is, or at least has become, part of the world’s problem yet Whitehead is insistent that true religion in its various expressions shares a commitment to the world we live in.  As a Christian who believes that God is with us, in Christ and in life,  I want to echo his claim that religion is world-loyalty.  Not only does a healthy expression of the Christian religion have a strong world-loyalty, but we believe God does.

my only exposure to whitehead is through secondary sources, but i really resonate with the “world-loyalty” definition. i’ve recently read both of pete rollins books and that idea — though articulated a little differently — is present in all his work. it seems to me that if christianity, and religion in general, is to have any real effect and retain any veracity, it must operate for the sake and transformation of the world.

Refreshing to hear someone NOT bashing the “religion” aspect of Christianity. I feel tension between a desire to totally reject the organized religious aspects of the church, and to give myself over completely to a liturgical mainline demination. To kill it or marry it? Or both.

It’s easy to bash religion as the problem. And it might be. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t the solution. And I’ve gotten burned out on tired “it’s not religion, it’s relationship” mantras. It IS religion - or it better be - because relationship has even less meaning in our present culture than religion.

Good food for thought, thanks. And welcome to CCBlogs!

This spirit is getting around. I know because many young or post-evangelicals are not longer taking up the culture wars of the previous generation.
